Our Work

Saint Mary's Church, Norwich CT. Founded in 1845, is the first Catholic parish east of the Connecticut River. Its current structure, constructed in 1922 from architectural precast stone, faced a significant challenge when it was declared unsafe in 2022, raising concerns about potential closure and demolition. The parish reached out to Loring & Son Masonry Restoration, Inc. for an assessment and solutions to preserve the church and its tower.

To ensure safety, we first installed fencing around the tower and facade to protect against falling debris. Scaffolding was then erected incrementally on each side to evaluate the scope of work and determine the best approach. Guided by our philosophy that demolition is rarely necessary—believing 99.9% of structures can be restored—we began with the tower. We carefully dismantled the stones, numbering each one to preserve the original layout, salvaging as many pieces as possible to maintain historical integrity while integrating new stones like a puzzle. For stability, we installed hundreds of Cintec anchors to bind the stones together and added Thor-Helical wall ties for additional reinforcement. The tower restoration was successfully completed by the end of 2024.

Stage two, focusing on the facade, is slated to begin in 2025, following the same meticulous process. The sides and back of the church require only minimal repairs, which will be addressed using lifts. This project was a formidable challenge, but one we wholeheartedly embraced—restoring historical structures like Saint Mary Church is at the core of what Loring & Son Masonry Restoration, Inc. stands for.

New London Harbor Lighthouse. Loring and Son Masonry was honored to participate in the restoration of this iconic lighthouse. The exterior of the 89-foot brownstone and brick lighthouse, built in 1801, was cleaned, repaired, re-pointed and re-painted. Along with completing the full exterior masonry and cast iron repair, we acted in the role of Construction Manager for this project. Many thanks to Brand Scaffold, Local Carpenters 24 and Painters Local 1122 Union for their fantastic contributions and professionalism.

Waterbury Clock Tower (Republican American Newspaper). The tower restoration project began in 2015 after a view through high-powered binoculars revealed spalling on the upper-level bricks. The Republican-American hired an engineering firm to conduct a drone survey in June 2015. Licensed drone pilots from First Flight Photography examined the facade of the 240-foot tower, and an assessment team rappelled down the tower.

The inspection produced videos and photos of the structure that showed spalling, cracks in the masonry and loose brick. The damage was due largely to the age of the tower, which was completed in 1909. Also, cold weather and moisture have taken their toll. Rain water leached into the masonry and froze, forming gaps that grew larger over time.

The Republican-American hired Loring and Sons Masonry of New London. Loring used advanced techniques to repair damage and preserve the tower’s appearance. The effort is expected to extend the tower’s life span for another century.

Loring and Son Masonry was honored to receive the 2017 Connecticut Preservation Award by the Connecticut Trust for Historical Preservation for our participation in this project.

We rebuild historic masonry structures to their former glory...Lasting for years to come

We find solutions

Challenges frequently arise. Our experience will get us through these challenges to deliver an optimum solution.

Masonry Restoration

Masonry restoration, including structural repairs, is our specialty. We are licensed installers of numerous commercial masonry restoration systems that are used in the repair of architectural masonry, including brick, bluestone, cast stone, concrete, granite, limestone, marble, plaster, sandstone, slate and terra cotta.

Masonry restoration is an art. It requires well equipped, well trained, and caring craftsmen to do the job correctly. Many of the buildings we have restored were constructed in the late 1800's, and staying true to the buildings original look is extremely important to you, and to us. It is also critical that the structural integrity of the building remains sound. We will follow the structural engineering specifications whenever structural repairs or modifications are needed.

We at Loring and Son Masonry are very proud of our completed restoration projects. We have many satisfied customers and will be happy to provide an estimate of work and, of course, a list of references will be supplied upon request.

Cleaning/Waterproofing

Over time, wind, sun, and water takes it toll on any exterior masonry surface. We can remove stains and restore the exterior surface of your building using our specially formulated cleaning agents. Once the surface is properly cleaned, we can apply several coats of the appropriate sealing and waterproofing agents. This will give new life to the exterior surface and protect it for many years to come.

Project Management Services

Loring and Son's management team will work collaboratively with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to provide seamless integration between all stages of your project. Our proven track record, problem solving skills and our ability to work as a team will ensure success from project initiation to project completion.
