Masonry Restoration
Masonry restoration, including structural repairs, is our specialty. We are licensed installers of Jahn masonry restoration systems, by CathedralStone. Jahn Restoration Mortars are intended for the repair of architectural masonry, including brick, bluestone, cast stone, concrete, granite, limestone, marble, plaster, sandstone, slate and terra cotta.
Masonry restoration is an art. It requires well equipped, well trained, and caring craftsmen to do the job correctly. Many of the buildings we have restored were constructed in the late 1800's, and staying true to the buildings original look is extremely important to you, and to us. It is also critical that the structural integrity of the building remains sound. We will follow the structural engineering specifications whenever structural repairs or modifications are needed.
We at Loring and Son Masonry are very proud of our completed restoration projects. We have many satisfied customers and will be happy to provide you an estimate of work and, of course, a list references will be supplied upon request.
Tuckpointing and Caulking
Tuckpointing (sometimes called repointing) of exterior masonry joints becomes necessary when the mortar between the joints is in a state of decay, usually due to exposure to the elements. Repointing exterior masonry joints involves removing the old joint mortar, repairing any damaged masonry and filling the joints with fresh, strength tested and color matched mortar.
When to repoint: Repointing should be considered whenever existing mortar joints are eroded 1/3 inch or more from the face of the masonry, or if the joints are visibly cracked or separated from the masonry units.
Caulking (joint sealant) is applied to transitions between masonry surfaces and other surfaces. For example, windows and doors installed in a masonry wall require the application of sealant to properly weatherproof any openings. Sealants are the most widely used weatherproofing material, and also the most incorrectly used. Although sealants are a relatively low cost item, they constitute a major function in a building's life cycle. Successful application of sealant depends on several steps, including joint design, material selection, substrate preparation, joint preparation and installation.
Cleaning
Over time, wind, sun, and water takes it toll on any exterior masonry surface. We can remove stains and restore the exterior surface of your building using our specially formulated cleaning agents. Once the surface is properly cleaned, we can apply several coats of the appropriate sealing and waterproofing agents. This will give new life to the exterior surface and protect it for many years to come.
